Committed To The Legacy
In 1964 Tom DeWan of Milwaukee, Wisconsin created a unique motorsports themed jacket with an asymmetrical racing stripe design down one side of the garment. Tom and his wife Carol began selling these jackets to motorcycle dealerships around the country. These jackets became very popular and soon attracted major brands in the motorcycle industry. DeWan started making officially licensed jackets for the likes of Honda, Yamaha, Triumph, BSA etc. This popularity also opened up doors into the 4 wheel market. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company placed an order for 50k jackets. This opened the flood gates and major companies also put their orders in for the now legendary DeWan jacket.
DeWan Manufacturing even sponsored teams and riders for motorcycle and auto racing. In Indy Car the number 28 car driven by Bill Simpson, of Simpson brand in car safety devices, was the official DeWan Jackets car. You could also see the DeWan name adorning the wings and bodies of various other cars in the field of that era.
DeWan Speed Apparel was also in Hollywood movies and worn by stars of the day including Paul Newman and Robert Wagner in Winning.
In the 60s and 70s DeWan apparel was seen in almost all facets of motor racing from racing suits to jackets and pit crew shirts.
